Military installations are located near Colorado Springs real estate in the north, south, and east parts of the city. A strong military presence in Colorado Springs is important to both the United States and the city. Colorado Springs homes are available for Army and Air Force families at several price points.
In the northern part of Colorado Springs CO real estate are several newer master-planned communities including Black Forest, Cordera, Wolf Ranch and Flying Horse, offering recreation centers, spas, tennis courts and a golf course, served by Academy District 20 Schools, which is one of the top rated districts in Colorado.

Fort Carson, the largest military installation in the area, is home to the 4th Infantry Division and the second and third battalions of the 10th Special Forces Group. Training for armor, infantry, and aviation takes place at Fort Carson.
Peterson Air Force Base carries on missile defense operations and development. Peterson is headquarters to the Air Force Space Command, Army Space & Missile Defense Command, Army Strategic Command, and US Northern Command. Activities at Peterson are also linked to the missile defense system.
Schriever Air Force Base is home to the 50th Space Wing, Space Warfare Center, and 576th Flight Test Squadron. In addition, Schriever is the site of the modern GPS Master Control and Operations Center and the U.S. Naval Observatory Alternate Master Clock.

The United States Air Force Academy and its landmark Academy Chapel are located in the northern reaches of the city where most of the city’s growth has taken place in the past ten years.
The first military base opened in 1942 shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Named for Kit Carson, Camp Carson trained and housed troops preparing for World War II. Shortly afterwards, the Colorado Springs Municipal Airport opened as a training base for heavy bombers. The airport was renamed Peterson Field. Ten years later, Peterson into a full-fledged base for the Air Force to use during the Korean War and President Dwight D. Eisenhower selected Colorado Springs over 300 sites to build the Air Force Academy.
By the mid 1960s during the Cold War, the main facility of NORAD was established at Cheyenne Mountain, increasing the military presence in the city. Falcon Air Force Base (now called Schriever Air Force Base), was founded in 1983 with the purpose of building missile defense and satellite control.
